Abstract

Introduction: Public education and preparedness are among the factors which can be effective in disaster risk reduction. The importance of this issue is such that these days the planners and experts identify education as one of the main indicators for confronting the disasters and reducing its impact. Therefore, achieving awareness and considering the safety measures are resulted from fundamental and continuous teaching which starts from the first stages of child learning and grows gradually. In this regard, education especially for preschool children and elementary level is of great importance and has been emphasized in the national education and training policies. With regard to the seismicity of the country and the importance of children as the future of any country and the messengers of safety, “Earthquake and safety” is among the issues that have been taken into consideration in formal and informal education in Iran and children get familiar with this subject in various stages from preschool to university level. This paper presents few samples of appropriate methods for teaching “Earthquake and safety” to teachers and instructors in preschool and school level in order to enhance and improve education.

Introduction: Psycho-social consequences and effects of natural disasters are important issues, but it has been paid little attention in our country. This research aims to study the effectiveness of psycho-social support intervention in Qazvin earthquake survivors in 2003.
Methods: In this research, about 389 of participated in meetings such as children and adults were assessed in order to determine the effectiveness of psycho-social support services for the injured before intervention and a year after providing services by 10 clinical psychologists. The control group was selected from unaffected areas in Qazvin province. The research was done by using different questionnaires such as 28 questions of public health; Rutter behavioral disorder; and questionnaire of stress disorder symptoms of Watson and Yule after disaster.
Findings: After receiving services, psycho-pathological disorders among people at age 15 or over were 33/5% (45% before intervention) in the experimental group and it was 23/1% (34/1% before intervention) in children (under the age of 15). Psychological support services could relieve significantly stress disorder symptoms after disasters in two groups.
Conclusion: Psycho-social support services to the injured can greatly minimize stress disorder symptoms after stressful disasters and psycho-pathological mental disorders among survivors and also prevent the prevalence of social problems in them.

Abstract

Inttoduction: Evidence has shown that various groups of the society can play an important role in disaster management. Therefore, countries undergo less vulnerability that various groups of people participate actively in risk reduction activities directly and also display their capabilities to confront and respond to disasters.
Learning these capabilities require more awareness and preparedness that results in people resilience to disasters. Hence, it should be identified the roles, needs, and attitudes of different groups in the society in order to facilitate the way for risk reduction initiatives, programs and methods development.
In this regard, presence of miscellaneous groups of people especially women is need to cooperate in parallel with men to apply and implement policies and activities related to disasters. In this paper, women vulnerabilities as well as their capability to respond disasters has been taken into consideration respectively. At the end, some suggestions have been offered briefly for making women more capable in risk reduction.

Abstract

Background: Community participation is one of the important bases of disaster management in confronting natural disasters. Khuzestan is one of the most important border provinces in the country that is highly prone to natural disasters. This research aimed to determine the status of people's participation in Khuzestan to respond to natural disasters from the viewpoints of officials.
Method: This study was conducted in four stages. First, the status of the province was evaluated regarding the occurrence of natural disasters. In the second stage, the province situation is addressed from the perspectives of related organizations, institutions and active NGOs in disasters. By using qualitative study and in-depth interviews in the third stage, the officials’ views on how to attract people to participate in confronting natural disasters was collected. In the final stage, after analyzing the obtained results, some strategies are presented in order to use these guidelines and recommendations and also to prevent the probable human casualties and damage in future disasters.
Findings: According to the managers' different views about disaster management issues and lack of a common terminology to apply in this field, the process of policy-making, coordination, planning, organizing and training has been undertaken in different ways in the organizations. Also, in the governmental system, the role of people as the most important stakeholders has not been considered appropriately which makes the governments feel more responsible for confronting natural disasters.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Establishment of people-centered institutions at the neighborhood level, provision and installation of basic facilities needed for rescue and relief in public places, especially at the level of neighborhood units, as well as training on how to use these facilities in times of crisis is important. The development of a culture of self-help and other relief, as well as holding maneuvers and workshops for public participation are other important measures to improve people's preparedness in the event of an earthquake. The development of people-centered institutions at the neighborhood level, in addition to responding to the crisis, is effective in preventing it, and the role of local councils in this regard is very important. In some developed countries, these institutions are responsible for carrying out some neighborhood development measures, such as improvement and rehabilitation projects. In community-based crisis management, the establishment of crisis management structures at the neighborhood level is emphasized and risk management is extended to all sections of society.

Abstract

Introduction: Given that severe and powerful earthquakes always cause many people to become homeless; therefore, the basic need for earthquake affected people is to find a shelter. However, this research is done in order to provide a model for allocating existing emergency settlements in Chizar neighborhood for earthquake affected ones considering the role of effective buildings.
Method: In this applied research, the selected case study is Chizar neighborhood which located in division eight in district one of Tehran Metropolis. In order to evaluate vulnerability and estimate of losses, casualties, injured and the probable homeless methods of JICA, Coburn & Spence and Mansouri and the fragility curves of Ghaemmaghamian were utilized, also sphere standards are used to estimate the housing capacity and to provide the basic needs of potential the people without shelters.
Findings: According to results of structural vulnerability, 32% of the buildings had low vulnerability, 6% of the buildings with medium vulnerability and 33% of the buildings had relatively high vulnerability and the rest of the buildings (29%) were highly vulnerable. The most suitable spaces for appropriate access and avoidance of dangerous buildings were selected after identifying open spaces. In addition, the capacity of each is estimated with regard to the unprotected people and the distance between the settlements from the place of residence, the immigrant people were assigned then food and basic needs were estimated.
Conclusion: The results show that the majority of homeless are from the southern part of Chizar neighborhood that comprised of masonry and worn-out texture buildings. It is essential to create or amend appropriate access routes between residential areas and open spaces due to the considerable distance between the vulnerable buildings and the open spaces. In addition, some of these open spaces belong to the private sector and negotiations must be made with their owners before earthquake occurrence in order to reach an agreement and use in emergencies
