Introduction: Traffic accidents in Iran is the second factor of death whereas, traffic accidents are the ninth cause of death in the world. Therefore, this study has been conducted for epidemiologic assessment of fatal traffic accidents in the Khuzestan province.
Methods: This is a desc riptive-analytical study which is performed from March to February 2010 through collection of existing documents of all victims died due to accidents and for obtaining a burial permit their bodies were referred to the Forensic Medicine Centers of Khuzestan cities. Data was analyzed by SPSS software.
Findings: Of 7856 investigated cases from 24 cities in Khuzestan province, Totally 1,514 persons died due to traffic accidents. Most of victims (35 percent) were 15-30 years old. Final cause of death in 45 percent of victims was head trauma. Majority of fatal accidents caused by cars in 57 percent and occurred on suburban roads. The highest percentage of traffic accidents victims were car passengers and motorcyclists with 46.5 and 21.5 percent, respectively.
Conclusion: According to the high percentage of fatal accidents in the country and province, to resolve this problem is necessary the using appropriate scientific programs and investment for reduction of accidents and improving the roads safety.
