INTRODUCTION: One way to reduce the damage and risks caused by earthquakes is to create preparedness among the people. Planning in this regard requires examining the level of awareness, performance, and preparedness of the people of Tehran regarding earthquakes. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to examine the attitude of the people of Tehran towards earthquakes.
METHODS: The study method in this study is field research and the statistical population in this study is all heads of households aged 15 and above living in Tehran. 1600 people were selected as the research sample and the required information was collected using a questionnaire. The statistics used were means, percentages, and Chi-square, t-test, and Pearson significance tests.
FINDINGS: More than 90 percent of the respondents stated that they had heard of the possibility of an earthquake, but only 45 percent considered this possibility to be high or very high. A very small percentage of respondents (9.2%) considered their level of knowledge about prevention and safety measures to be high, and only 3.5% considered their level of knowledge about how to prevent and deal with earthquakes to be high.
CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that the people of Tehran have taken the occurrence of earthquakes to be somewhat serious, their level of knowledge about ways to deal with and prevent them is very low.
